無責任艦長 タイラー (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor)
The United Planets Space Force is on the edge of war with the Rasalgon Empire, and now new recruits are needed as the Space Force is readying itself towards the inveitable. New recurit Justy Ueki Tylor, with luck on his side, becomes the captain of the destoryer Soyokaze. His crew think he is irresponsible. His superiors think he is stupid. The Raalgon just hate him. Everyone wants him dead, but at the end of the day, he is still standing. Is he a genius? Or is he just a lucky S.O.B??
Irresponsible Captain Tylor was first aired in 1993 as a 26-episodes TV series, based on the comic and novels of the same name by the late Yoshioka Hitoshi. Later, 9 OVA episodes are released.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor (1993)
26 episodes TV series
I absolutely love the TV series, as the whole series is so funny and wacky you can never have a boring moment in it. Interesting characters design (especially for the marines, where you will spot a really familiar character who is known to be one of the best horror film villan in the 80s and 90s ha ha). You will get to see, most importantly, whether Tylor is really stupid or he is just a real genius.
Simply one of the best!

Irresponsible Captain Tylor
9 episodes OVA
Although I have grouped all 9 episodes together, it is not a really good idea.
The first 2 starts in where the TV series left off, as Tylor is given a mission that only an insane person can do it, or so it seems. The scarely thing is, Tylor this time really has a plan...
This time the series will be full of untrust among the characters, so much so that it can really ruin their days. Interestingly, this 2 episodes are not based on the novels, but instead an original story.
The next 6 episodes are "separate" stories about main the characters. The first one is on the young Raalgon princess. The second one is on the hotshot pilot from Soyokaze. The third one is on the Soyokaze marines. The fourth one is on tylor and his "girl friend", Yuriko Star. The fifth and sixth ones are part of an story arc for the final episodes.
Character designs here, from this point on, are done by a different team of people. The characters now have a more "refined" look. Although the stories still follow the original novels, there are some fundamental difference between them. (You will have to find that out yourselves ha ha, just buy an official DVD copy and you will find out.)
The last OVA kind of leaves me wanting more, but sadly, this will be the last of it, at least for the anime. The novels will have a even longer way to go, but that will be for you to find out.

Notes: Right Stuf has done a fabulous job on handling this classic, in my opinion. For each DVD, they included notes on the series during translation, or differences between the anime story and the novels. Other anime license holders should consider doing the same thing for their own titles!
